![]() ![]() ![]() First a little background: I already had a working setup with my computer connected via HDMI to my TV. I had a Dell Studio XPS 8000 desktop with. Recently I've bought my dream's notebook, a Dell XPS 15 but since then this dream became a kind of endless nightmare. I'm almost getting crazy to. Jun 07, 2011 I have a laptop with a hdmi port I have read elsewhere that I need to 'enable' it in order for it to be. How do you enable the hdmi port on your computer? Dell™, the DELL logo, XPS™. Setting Up Your XPS Laptop To enable or disable wireless: 1. The HDMI cable transmits both. I had the same issue - no signal to my external monitor when hdmi was plugged in. I finally went in to 'device manager' (click windows key, type 'device manager' then open device manager. ![]() I believe I went to 'display adapters' and clicked on the nvidia one, right-clicked and selected 'properties' and found that nvidia was disabled (I guess intel took precedence?); enabled nvidia (I think it was under the 'general' tab), and immediately my external monitor came to life! Hope this helps some other people. I have collected dozens of tips from people about what worked for their particular combination of model, operating system, & graphics device. Here are my general instructions, compiled from many posts left on the Laptop Audio discussion board. Preliminary steps: 1. Plug the laptop into a power source. Some of the models have a power management scheme that will not allow for HDMI audio while running on batteries. Later, after you get your HDMI audio working, if you find that it still does not work on batteries you can change your power management settings in the Control Panel. Turn off the computer and TV before connecting the HDMI cable. Later, after you get your HDMI audio working, if you disconnect the cable while the computer is running and lose your audio, try closing and then re-opening whichever program you were using that generates audio. Every time you try a different solution you should reboot the computer. HDMI audio is extremely finicky and seems to usually need a reboot. Make the Connection: 1. Connect the HDMI cable to the computer and TV. If the TV has a 'DVI/HDMI' port do not use it. Use a port for HDMI only. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI port you are using. Adjust the TV settings to receive HDMI audio if any. Turn on the computer. (Optional, some people close the laptop lid immediately after hitting the power button but I am not sure why. Most people should not need to do this.) 4. Some models do better if the TV is set to be the primary display. To set, repeatedly press Fn+F8 (or ctrl+alt+F4) to cycle through the settings (laptop display only/laptop display plus external display/external display only). Reboot the laptop. Go to Start>Control Panel>Sound>Playback tab. Make 'HDMI' the default device. (If 'HDMI' is not there, right click in the white area and look under 'Show Disconnected Devices' or 'Show Disabled Devices' and see if it is there.) Post Connection Problems: 1. If there is still no option to select 'HDMI' as the default audio playback device, try re-installing or updating the graphics driver, or even try an older version. The graphics driver is the driver for HDMI audio, not the regular audio driver. Some people with Intel graphics had better results by uninstalling the graphics driver, rebooting, and letting Windows look for a driver -- instead of downloading the driver from the Dell support site. Try disconnecting and then reconnecting the HDMI cable. If you are using Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center but get no HDMI audio even after it is selected as the default playback device, go to Control Panel>Sound>Playback tab>Audio/Playback device>HDMI>properties>Advance>Exclusive Mode and uncheck 'exclusive mode'. Try a different HDMI cable. I had the same issue - no signal to my external monitor when hdmi was plugged in. I finally went in to 'device manager' (click windows key, type 'device manager' then open device manager. Hope this helps some other people. Same issue here.2 laptops, both Inspiron with Intel HD graphics 3000. System1 has an i3 processor-->no issues using HDMI to Philips LCD tv. System2 has an i5 processor-->HDMI to Philips LCD does not work, no signal detected. This system was sent back for repair to Dell, but returned unchanged.they tested functionality to a HDMI monitor, which worked. So after 'repair' of course the system still didn't work using HDMI to a Philips LCD. I believe it works fine on a HDMI monitor, but just the combination to a Philips LCD gives problems. Also I tested it on another (Philips) LCD, same result. After seaching the internet on HDMI and Intel Graphics 3000 I believe the videocard or driver is an issue. The fact that the i3 system works fine makes my think the problem on the other system should be solveable.but how. Hi, i had the same problem when i newly loaded windows 7 on my dell xps 15z. I read all the forum and i found this one working for me. I found the service tag of my machine and i found the nvidia graphics driver from dell for my machine as well the exact graphics driver from nvidia website for my graphics card and installed both. I uninstalled the intel graphics driver since running both nvidia and intel driver hide the HDMI output option on the playback device. Once i uninstalled the intel graphics driver, i was able to see the HDMI output option on playback device and i made it default and so the HDMI started picking sound on my TV. You may have to reconnect again to make sure everything works fine. Hope this helps. Same problem here, BUT, it is now FIXED as of the latest update. Download the latest windows updates as well as the latest dell BIOS updates. Fixes many of the screen resolution problems we have been having. Fixes the dual monitor NOT displaying on your HDTV via an HDMI cable. Suggestion: Make sure to buy a QUALITY HDMI cable with the latest compatibility for todays high speed audio and video needs. I bought two different kinds and both are more than capable and compatible with todays higher speed/high quality audio/video tech.
