![]() Say I have a standard DirecTV receiver box and get standard service, whatever the cheap account is. Can I buy one of the HD receiver boxes on ebay or amazon or whatever for ~$100 and swap my card into it and still get service? I don't mind if it isn't HD service, I'm mostly interested in the physical connectors on the HD receiver vs. The SD receiver. The SD box only has s-video and composite video out and RCA style stereo out. The HD box has HDMI and component as well as digital audio output which would make my life a lot easier (having hdmi through the wall to my TV and whatnot). The problem is I am 'getting' directv as part of a park wide roll out for my condo association. ![]() Jun 20, 2013 Does a 'used' receiver require buying a new access card. Call the DIRECTV Access Card Department. It is usually $20 for a new access card to activate. Mar 21, 2015 you'll probily have to buy a new access card from what directv told me and last I knew. The same is true when you activate the receiver after you. ![]() I am paying for it whether I like it or not and my old TV service will be shut off. They will provide a 'free' SD receiver or a 'free' HD receiver. To get the HD one I have to contract for a year of upgraded HD service at an additional $10 a month. Yes that is $120 per year which is more than the cost of the box by itself (according to most online sales places) sold new. I watch about 30 minutes of TV at home per month or so, so. The $10 a month fee is a waste. The only reason I want the better box is the better/more convenient connection options. ![]() The picture quality of an HD feed is pretty much inconsequential. Guess I'll just have to make due with the crappy receiver. Yes that is $120 per year which is more than the cost of the box by itself (according to most online sales places) sold new. Note, DirecTV does not sell boxes any more. All are lease. Even they ones you 'buy' Not entirely true. They'll still sell boxes to national accounts and most business customers. They generally have 3-5 year contracts with them anyways, and it's much more economical to sell them the boxes than try to extort the fees for 8-32 receivers out of them a month. On a stupid note, I had a customer recently who had 8 brand new H23-600 receivers, and had one fail without 2 days out of the box. These were all racked together and looked nice and pretty, and suddenly they're completely out of H23 units. They sent a damned H2400 unit which is nice and all, but it's smaller and has completely different rear layouts and IR codes than the previous units. That is not helpful in a commercial environment where consistency is key!
